Former adviser to Kazakhstan's permanent mission to UNESCO Valery Tolmachev, declared not guilty of hijacking the plane in Italy, came back to Kazakhstan, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports. “He (Tolmachev) arrived in Almaty from Rome yesterday accompanied by his mother. About two weeks ago he got out of hospital, the court declared him not guilty and all charges were dismissed, including the medical “charges”. They (doctors) made sure he was absolutely healthy,” permanent representative of Kazakhstan in UNESCO Olzhas Suleimenov said. He said that Tolmachev “had a nervous breakdown” and “that’s why he spend a whole year in the Eternal city of Rome”. “I visited him several times in different places in Rome, in the hospital and in jail, but I saw that he was quite sane. He will now have some rest and will go back to work,” Suleimenov said. Answering the question whether Tolmachev will work in the Foreign Ministry again, Suleimenov noted that “this is not decided yet, as he has made much stir in the world”. “I doubt that the ministry will offer him a diplomatic position right away. But there will be a job for him. He is very knowledgeable, a polyglot. There are many people who want to work with him. I hope he will find something here,” he said. During his flight from Paris to Rome in April 2011 he attempt to hijack a plane and divert it to Tripoli, Libya. The Alitalia plane crew managed to restrain him and he was detained by Italian police upon landing at the airport in Italy for attempting to hijack the plane. Examination confirmed that Valeriy Tolmachev was mentally ill and was not in control of his actions. Initially he was charged with abduction and hijacking attempt, but an Italian court ruled that he was mentally ill and dismissed the criminal charges. Tolomachev has been working in the Foreign Ministry since 1986. He has been an adviser to permanent representative of Kazakhstan in UNESCO since 2002. After the Italian incident he was released from his duties.
